July is National Parks and Recreation Month, a time to celebrate the incredible natural spaces that enrich our lives. It also happens to be one of those months where visitors come and stuff themselves into our single-closet homes thinking. “Where better to revel in the beauty of the outdoors than on Cape Cod?” With its stunning beaches, lush trails, and vibrant community parks, the Cape offers endless opportunities to connect with nature and enjoy the summer. So, we can’t really blame our families for setting their sights on our cherished community during National Parks and Recreation Month. Looking for ideas on how to get them out of the house? Let’s talk about it!
The Cape is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, from novice to advanced! From the iconic Cape Cod National Seashore to the charming local parks in each town, there's something for everyone to enjoy.

Spanning over forty miles of pristine coastline, the National Seashore is a crown jewel. This protected area offers breathtaking views, hiking trails, bike paths, and swimming beaches. During July, take advantage of ranger-led programs, guided walks, and educational events that highlight the unique ecology and history of the Cape. Standard day passes range from $15 to $25, and the Seashore also has the great option of discounted senior passes for members in our community who are 65+, active military members, and veterans. Similarly, the DCR also offers free senior parking passes which covers the cost of parking at most state parks.

Local Parks and Recreation:
Each town on the Cape boasts its own collection of parks, playgrounds, and recreational facilities. Whether you're looking for a peaceful stroll through a community garden, a lively game of tennis, or a family picnic by the pond, you'll find it here. Many towns organize unique events during July to celebrate Parks and Recreation Month, including outdoor concerts, festivals, and sports tournaments. Little ones in tow? Hiking, Biking and Water Adventures:
Explore the Cape's diverse landscapes on its extensive network of hiking and biking trails. The Cape Cod Rail Trail is a popular choice, offering miles of paved paths that wind through scenic woodlands and charming towns. Numerous conservation lands offer unpaved hiking trails with varying levels of difficulty. With our proximity to the Atlantic Ocean and Cape Cod Bay, the Cape is a paradise for water lovers here, too: enjoy kayaking, paddleboarding, sailing, fishing, or simply relaxing on the beach.
Tips for Enjoying the Outdoors:
Plan ahead: Check the weather forecast and pack accordingly. Some parks and beaches have a minimal entrance or parking fee - be sure to check before making the trek!
Stay hydrated: Bring plenty of water, especially on hot days.
Protect yourself from the sun: Wear sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses.
Be mindful of wildlife: Observe animals from a distance and avoid disturbing their habitats.
Leave no trace: Pack out what you pack in and respect the environment.
Check for Ticks: Cape Cod has ticks, so check yourself after outdoor activity.
